Our customer has moved from London and is keen to modernise her new home and garden. Upon our arrival it was covered in old, concrete slabs, with large steps going up to the highest level, covered in gravel.
Whilst the boys destroyed and removed an old shed from the garden, they also brought in a delivery of stunning Larch. Larch wood is a tough, dense softwood that provides exceptional natural durability, strength, and resistance to rot without needing heavy chemical treatments.
Natural resins and a dense grain make larch highly resistant to decay, rot, and insect damage. It is much harder and stronger than common softwoods like pine, allowing it support heavy structural loads. Larch also handles changing weather well and resists warping, twisting, or cracking.
Because it resists the elements naturally, it requires fewer chemical preservatives than other softwoods. It features a warm reddish-brown or pale pink heartwood that ages gracefully into a silvery-gray patina when exposed to UV light.Larch is fast-growing, biodegradable, and often sourced locally, making it a smart, sustainable choice for outdoor structures.
As well as constructing a new deck with Larch, the boys also heightened the level of an old red brick border with it. Using the existing garden within the design is economical, and will create a more functional border that looks great. We also re-used the gravel that was in the upper section of the garden, and transferred it down to the lower section.
Larch has a soft, warm tone, fading overtime to a more muted colour. It’s really interesting to see how it changes in different weather and through the seasons. The re-used gravel works well next to the new decking.
Simple stepping stones have been laid going from the garden gate, across the top platform to the top of the steps. Our customer is an artist and a keen gardener, so she will be planting and mulching this area, along with the new raised borders by the decking.
The boys constructed a corrugated metal vegetable border. It will certainly look great when it’s filled with soil and lots of delicious crops growing. We have left a section of the old slabs at the top of the garden, which will be used as a greenhouse base. The green house will be delivered over the autumn/winter.
Our customer has plans to plant a Greengage tree next to the stepping stones, with other perennials, shrubs and bulbs. We are really looking forward to seeing this garden next summer when it has been transformed with luscious planting.
