The boys began this project with a mini digger, using it to scalp the lawn and dig down in certain areas. The soil was taken out in barrows to the front where we had a skip. The skip was replaced a couple of times to take away all of this waste.
The paved pathway that ran around the house was also removed. A new pond started to be dug, and ballast was laid down in the area that will be the base of a new hoggin pathway that goes around the garden.
A circular section was left, which will be turfed. Membrane was laid down, which will act as a barrier for a gravelled area. We had three barrows removing soil at the same time, which got the job done pretty swiftyly.
Upon my arrival on Monday morning the following week, the pathway leading round the house had been scalped, and Jerry and Sam had already made a start on the paving. They were also starting to lay the edging that will go around the circular lawn area.
The Egyptian limestone is already looking beautiful. The edging will match perfectly, as the boys have cut all the edging tiles from the large slabs. This garden has a large driveway with a garage; which means excellent access for us, and a lot of space to be able to make mixes and store materials.
The centre of the circle will be a lawn, with hoggin being laid within the outer circle, as a pathway. Sam and Jerry laid large slab stepping stones from the patio around the house. Our customer has already started the planting ideas, and is keen to grow creeping thyme around the stepping stones to soften the edges.
The planting within the garden has been well thought out by our customer, with a strong ethos on biodiversity and drought tolerance, but with a minimal planting scheme. We will be laying meadow turf around the new pond, and a small area of grasses will also be planted to be viewed from the kitchen window.
Three metre timber posts were sunk into the ground, which will form the base of a pergola walkway. Roses will be grown up and over it. Perennials will be planted within two sections around the patio, with the majority of the garden being mulched, and some climbers along the back garden fence.
