Our customer wanted a low maintenance space, without a lawn or heavy planting. This garden is a bit shady, so the lawn that had been laid when the building was built was struggling, making it patchy and muddy. It was not a very pleasant space for the family to relax in.

There was old, slippery decking near to the back gate, which we planned to remove. Jerry and Sam constructed a timber frame for a new, decked area by the patio doors. The weather during this project was very wet, with Britain experiencing rainfall every day from the start of the year until the third week of February. As you can see, it was incredibly muddy.

A high quality, oak effect composite decking was chosen for this garden. It has a warm tone to it and really compliments the house. It will be great for the family who live here to be able to walk out the back door in comfort.

At the other end of the garden, the old decking was removed. The existing blocks that had been under the decking were kept in situ, to use as the height for the new paving. We always try and reuse materials where possible, making more cost effective options as well as being better for the environment.

The yellow limestone paving instantly brightens up the space. It is durable and hard wearing and will compliment the new, timber raised beds – click here to look at our post about their construction.

We enjoyed planting up the raised beds with a selection of shade and sun loving plants; such as ferns, brunnera, pulmonaria, Christmas box, primroses, and herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and some ornamental grasses. Once the plants grow they will soften the look of this garden. Check back in with us soon to see what else we are up to.
