Timber Garden Design in Ashley Down

For this project, the focus was on timber. The garden was very nondescript upon our arrival. Our customer was keen to add structure to the space, along with planting and a seating area.

The boys started by removing the old, paved pathway and fence panels that went along the border with the neighbour. Holes were then dug for new posts to be sunk into. The waste was taken away.

Once the new fence was in place, we could see the space that we were working with, and it already seemed much bigger. The boys started to scalp the lawn to remove the turf,

The new fence from the outside instantly looked so much better. We had good access on this job, and were able to unload bulk bags right by the garden.

The timber raised border was constructed and lined with dpc liner to protect the wood from wet soil. The pergola frame began construction. Just adding these simple elements really started bringing this project together.

The next step was to lay the paving. We chose yellow limestone, which works really well with the timber design.

Whilst the boys were at this stage of the process, I went on holiday. I returned a week later to see this beautiful garden. Such a fantastic transformation. The stepping stones across the hoggin work really well, with additional stepping stones in the curved border to make gardening easier.

Three climbers have been included in the planting around the garden. These will grow up the trellis and fence and will turn this into a lush oasis. The tree will provide much needed shade once it grows up by the pergola.

The new seating area is a delight, with the planting spilling over the edges. Mexican fleabane has been planted at the edge of the hoggin. This is a great self seeder, is drought tolerant and doesn’t need much watering.

The trellis is a good way to hide the old fence on the opposite side of the garden, and will also provide an easy way for the climbers to attach. It also allows air to flow, which is important in garden design. We are really pleased with this garden design. It has transformed a small, dingy space, into a bright and welcoming haven.
