Wildlife Friendly Garden in Emerson’s Green

Over the past few weeks we have been transforming the front garden of this property into a beautiful wildlife friendly space, and have constructed a decked area with a pergola in the back.

The front garden was a regular type of garden when we began, with a lawn, some shrubs and perennials. The customer was keen to attract wildlife to their garden and also to screen off their garden for privacy. The boys started by scalping the turf, removing and saving some of the shrubs and perennials, and getting rid of others.

Hazel hurdle panels were brought in, and added to be the fence. These give a more rustic feel and will go with the wildlife vibe. The hurdles will allow insects to live in and around them, and there are areas at the bottom where small mammals can go through.

The panels were attached to timber posts which were then cut down to size. The access on this garden was great, with us being able to have our truck right next to the action. Whilst the fence was going in, the boys started to dig out a deep pond with a mini digger.

Shelves were included for plants to sit on. In the back garden an old paved area was being replaced. The majority of it had to be pulled up and removed so that the level for the decking would work perfectly with the back patio doors.

A large rose was cut right back and was dug up, to be transferred to the top of the garden. It had become too big and was swamping the steps up to the lawn. Holes were dug and timber posts were installed for the frame of the pergola.

Whilst the pergola frame was being constructed we started bringing in more materials for the decked area and removed the green waste. The boys measured the levels continuously to make sure the decking would be a perfect fit.

A layer of membrane was added underneath the decking, with the frame being constructed over the top. Stunning dark composite deck boards were added.

Upon completion of both gardens, I returned for one final task, placing some rocks and differing sized pebbles around and on the first shelf of the pond. I enjoyed seeing that the new decked area had already been strung with lights and decorations.

But the real wow factor was most certainly the front garden. The meadow turf, which is filled with established plants, had popped up after only a few days of being laid there. Flowers were swaying in the gentle breeze, and a pigeon came down to drink the pond water whilst I was working.

We have planted a Sorbus on the boundary, over looking the new garden. Perennial plants and shrubs have been planted around three sides of this area. The standard rye grass, some of which was left after we had finished working, is already growing back. I hope to return next year to see this garden flourishing.

The lily pads had also floated up to the surface of the water, since I dropped it into the middle last week. The water was looking very clear. We added in some floating, oxygenating plants, along with a Lily and some others. The hurdles look effective and complimentary as the back drop to this new wildlife-friendly garden. Drop us a line if you’d like to discuss having a pond added to your garden.
