Upgraded Decking with Planted Borders

Jerry and Sam have been working in the sunshine, on this back garden on the outskirts of Bristol. Our customer was keen to have their decking upgraded and modernised, with some planting added to the side of the garden.

To start the job, Jerry and Sam removed the top of the decking, which was old and rotting, but kept the timber frame below. New, composite deck boards will be added to this. Whilst the old decking was being removed, we began to take out the bamboo behind the decking.

All waste and materials have been going through the house and up the stairs to the road level above, so it’s been an interesting project to work on, especially as it has lovely views out onto the Somerset countryside.

Bamboo roots were dug up, with membrane laid under the timber frame. A native hedge will be planted here in the autumn in place of the bamboo. This will be more beneficial to wildlife and will give interest throughout the seasons. The old fence behind the bamboo was also removed as it had seen better days.

Once the bamboo had been removed, the boys got to working on laying a new yellow limestone edge to the garden. Within this they have created a new border down one length of the garden, as well as adding in other shrubs and perennials to the existing border. These plants will help to create a more beautiful space.

Simple landscaping, such as edging can really help to make a more functional and inviting garden haven. The last items to finish off this garden are the new, composite deck boards, to lay on the existing timber frame, and bark mulch for the borders. Mulching your borders are one of the most important things you can do in your garden. It helps to retain moisture in the soil, suppresses weeds and as it degrades it improves the soil.
