The fence lying on the ground was taken apart and made into a bespoke fence of sections, so that Sam could construct it behind the wooden chalet/summer house. At present, we are keeping the old wooden gates at the back of the garden, so that we can secure them each evening. But once all the materials have come in and out, we will then add the remaining fence panel and gate to the back of the property.

There has been a lot of concrete to break out from this garden – old concrete footings, edging and a red brick edge. The best of the red bricks we will save. Flo and the boys broke it away, with it all being taken to a skip outside in the street.

Whilst that work was going on, Sam prepared a trench for a new concrete footing. A small retaining wall is being built here, which will work as the edge of the patio.

Sam created the low wall using limestone edging pavers. These will compliment the limestone paving slabs.

You can see how effective the retaining wall is with the shining limestone paving slabs. The difference in the natural colouring of the stone gives a really pleasing look to the overall composition of the patio. Rather than one flat tone, these cool hues define the mood of a modern outdoor space.

Come back next week to see how this garden design in north Bristol is developing. The Christmas holidays are approaching, and this project is sure to transform radically before then.
