From Greenhouse Base to Grass

We had a nice end of the week project in a large back garden in Brentry, North Bristol. The family who live here moved in this year and are keen to make changes to the garden. We started working on their garden in the autumn, planting up four borders. Whilst we were there we discussed an old greenhouse base, which was a bit of an eye-sore.

So, on Thursday two of us went in and began by smashing out and ripping up the concrete and brick edging. We took away a full truck load of hardcore – as there are steps down to this area of the garden, we had to wheel barrow all the waste up a ramp which was a good work out!

Once all the waste was out of the way, we spent the second day preparing the ground, removing any small pieces of rubble, transferring soil to other parts of the garden and grading the area to the right level.

Whilst the ground was being prepared George got to work on the wooden edging of the border, including 6×1 pieces of timber to fill the gap that had been created when we removed the concrete edge.

It has been absolutely perfect weather for landscaping this week – still and calm, no wind, rain, sun or snow – and this made turfing a very pleasant job. We would usually lay rolls horizontally to a house, but as the house was so set back from the area that we were working on, we decided to lay the rolls going off the edge of the border so that we had a nice straight line.

We were very pleased with the finish of this section of the garden, and once the grass grows it will blend completely. We will be working on a long border in the front garden of this property in the New Year, so come back then to see the continuing transformation of this garden…
