Opposite the side of the garden that we had landscaped, was a long border that was a bit untidy and filled with weeds. We set to work, making our way down the border, cutting a clean edge through the turf and pulling out weeds. We decided that we would move the compost bin to the end of the border, just behind the Lilac tree so that it wouldn’t appear so obvious in the garden.
We weeded the corner border at the end of the patio so that we could plant daffodil bulbs under the Apple tree, that had recently gone past their best in the garden.
Once the weeding and shaping was done we got down to laying out the plants. A lavender hedge will look beautiful down the side of the patio. We planted a white ornamental Passion Flower that will climb it’s way up the trellis and pergola.
We decided to take out a large rose on the left of the stepping stones, which was too close to the entrance of the patio. We cut a new, larger border and added a different rose to the centre of the bed, further from the stepping stones. The rose had been bought by the customer as a replacement.
To suppress weeds, we underplanted the new rose with oregano, thyme and lemon verbena nearest the wall. This looked very nice once it had been mulched with compost. We also talked through rose pruning tips and care of the plants with our customer whilst we were working.
Once the plants in the corner grow it will look colourful, with a ceanothus in the far corner, a sedum herbstfreude, evergreen grasses, verbena bonariensis, dill, cosmos, echinacea, rudbeckia, a small patio rose and Russian sage threading through it. We recommended to our customer to plant bulbs in the autumn to provide more colour through the seasons.
It was a real pleasure working in this garden, and we will look forward to seeing it in the future when the planting has developed and filled the borders.
