The first step was to scalp the small back lawn, which was patchy and didn’t grow very well. There is no access to the garden, other than through the house, which makes it difficult to maintain it or to store gardening equipment such as mowers. Our customer wanted something that they could manage.
Next they started ripping out the old decking by the patio doors. They also removed the rotten timber frame that had been running around the perimeter of the lawn.
The rotten timber was taken away to the recycling centre, with some of the better preserved pieces being taken to our customer’s allotment. It’slways good to re-use materials where possible.
Areas were marked out with chalk spray, to work placement of out our new design. The central area which was lawn is going to have artificial grass installed in it’s place. Although it is not environmentally friendly, it is being used on a fairly small area and will mean that this family can go out and use their garden, without it being muddy where the grass doesn’t grow or have to store a mower.
This family also own a dog – it’s always difficult to maintain a decent lawn if you have pets on it daily, which is why they chose the artificial grass option. Soft wood timber sleepers were brought in to create a raised bed, these were created in situ so that they didn’t have to be moved.
Soil was shifted to create the right level for the new artificial lawn, and to give a bit more depth to the new border. We will make sure the level on the base of the espaliered tree trunk is correct too.
Particular shrubs that our customer wanted removed were dug up and taken away, with others being pruned and tidied up. As they are keen allotment gardeners, there are specific plants that they would like to cultivate in their garden.
Excess soil that had been dug out in the area where the new shed base is being constructed was used to fill the two raised beds. The soil is of good quality and great to be able to re-use this in the design.
These raised beds would be perfect places to start off growing vegetables before transplanting them to their allotment. The next step is to construct the new shed in this area, then to build the new timber frame for the decking and lay the deck boards, and of course laying the artificial turf.
