Timber Framed Heat Pump Garden Design

Over the past few weeks, we have been working on an interesting project in the Knowle area of South Bristol. Our design was to create a more functional space, so that the family could access the garden more easily from their basement and also to house a new heat pump system.

The three storey town house looks down onto the garden, which didn’t have good access, either through the kitchen basement or through the garden. All materials went in and out through the bottom of the garden, up and down a ladder. It’s definitely been the most fun entrance into a garden for a while, though hard work moving materials and waste in and out.

Team Dan began the job by constructing the timber frame for the decked steps that would wind down from the back door into the garden.

A wooden archway and composite decking was already in situ towards the end of the garden, so our design was to update the section next to it; to join it up with the existing items. The previous scraggly turf was removed, to enable us to install paving.

Joinery is a beautiful thing, with such skill involved, and seeing the skeleton of the steps take shape was very pleasing to us and our customer. The majority of the timber was brought in over the heighest part of the wall so that it would go down straight into the area where we were constructing the frame.

You might think that having a shed right outside the backdoor is a bit strange, but this is the structure that is housing the heat pump cylinder. The cylinder is an insulated water tank. This stores the water after it has been heated, which means that you do not have to constantly run the heating system in your home at an additional expense.

Heat pumps offer numerous benefits, including energy efficiency, lower running costs, reduced carbon footprint, and improved indoor air qualityThey can also provide both heating and cooling, and may even increase a home’s value. The cylinder shed was built as a bespoke structure. Underneath it is an area that will be used for storage. Bespoke timber doors are being created for the front of the area that you can see in the picture. The Vaillant Heat Pump has been installed next to the wall by the heat pump specialist.

Within the the decked staircase we have constructed a raised bed that will be planted. Below it the grey limestone paved area has been laid, with an area of soil prepared for meadow turf that will be laid shortly. We have also added in extra timber screening to provide the boundary between the neighbouring garden. This runs along from the screening which was already in situ.

Gravel was laid inside the under store and then lined with membrane, to make a solid base. It’s always good to have storage in a garden. It’s really good seeing this garden design coming to fruition. The final parts of the woodwork are being completed, with the meadow turf being added next week. Come back soon to see the finished photos of this Bristol garden.
