Laying Meadow Turf in Your Garden Design

Ali designed a more functional, colourful garden that will entice wildlife, as well as being less maintenance for our customer. The boys constructed this garden in North Bristol over the past few weeks. It’s a lovely sloping garden, but needed some TLC to make it a more enjoyable space.

The hard landscaping consisted of taking out overgrown shrubs and vegetation, creating timber raised beds at both the top and bottom edges of the steps, moving the old paving from the lower part of the garden and reusing it up at the top, and installing a new patio at the lower section.

A timber framed shed base was also constructed in preparation for a shed that will be delivered soon.

Once the hard landscaping was completed, trees were planted at the top of the garden, and the raised beds were filled with a variety of colourful flora.

The last part of the design was to lay the meadow turf. This is mature turf that is grown in a soil-less system, and includes a large variety of native British species. This particular turf is low growing, and can either be cut once a month during the growing season, or simply cut down to the ground annually in mid September. Low grow turf is good for small gardens, or urban gardens, where it is easier to manoeuvre around and doesn’t get too high and out of control.

The meadow turf arrives on a pallet. It is much lighter than standard rye grass rolls of turf. The girls moved it into the garden and laid it alongside and in between the newly replaced paved stepping stones.

Meadow turf is a fantastic product. It almost instantly gives colour and life to your lawn area, with flowers pushing up just days after it is laid . It requires watering every day for 3 weeks upon installation, but after that should mostly take care of itself.

Unlike a standard lawn, it doesn’t need constant mowing, and the species within the mat of turf will self seed over time, filling in gaps and adding more plants to the area. Which gives less space for weed seeds to blow in.

The finished garden is absolutely stunning. Just imagine relaxing in this garden, surrounded by birds singing, insects fluttering and a nice, cold drink in your hand…

The boys created a bug hotel with some of the old paving stones and other bits of wood that would otherwise have gone to the tip. A good bit of recycling, which will give lots of creatures a home.

The circular patio at the top was from the original garden. This was kept and cleaned up. The circular edge works well with the straight lines around it.

It’s a pleasing garden from every angle, and we feel thrilled that our customer can now enjoy such a beautiful space.
