Installing a Large New Lawn

For the last phase of this garden design project in Fishponds, we’ve been installing a beautiful, new lawn. Our team had to do a lot of preparation prior to the 140 rolls of turf arriving.

We used a rotavator, rakes, spades and a dutch hoe to break up the soil. As the ground was quite soggy in places we added some sand to soak up the water. The Camellia that we dug up at the start of this project, was replanted next to the bomb shelter. Straight away this mature plant gave instant allure to the space.

Whilst the team were preparing the soil, Jerry installed a new charcoal coloured sail over the new porcelain patio. This was bolted into the walls of the house.

The ground need to be carefully levelled and graded, with large stones, roots and lumps removed.

As the soil was continuously prepared, we brought the rolls of turf in from the front driveway in wheelbarrow’s. Another shrub that we had saved from the early days of this project was also planted in the main border. This Viburnum is flowering and will look fantastic as it grows larger. Our customer will be planting the remainder of the borders and raised beds in the springtime.

Once the turf starts being laid around the stepping stones, it really brings all of the different sections of the garden together, as your eye travels around the space.

The bomb shelter looks particularly good now, standing out against the green of the grass and the wood tone of the timber. It has now become a feature of the garden, rather than something stuck down at the end of it.

Care was taken with the height of the turf around the edge of the new raised beds. It was cut perfectly in line with the bottom edge of the timber. Walking down the steps onto the stepping stones across the lawn will be a real pleasure.

Our team laid one half of the lawn first of all, so that we would not have to walk on it once it was laid. After installation, new turf needs to be watered daily for 3 weeks and should not be walked on by people or pets.

As we walked in with wheelbarrows filled with rolls of turf, it was great to see the new shade sail go up across the patio.

The new balustrade with galvanised wires, looks stylish overlooking the rest of the garden.

Whilst the main body of the lawn continued to be laid, Flo worked on the turf in between the stepping stones.

This new lawn is looking incredible, and gave our team a tremendous sense of satisfaction as it neared completion. Check back in with us soon to see the final photos of this garden. We imagine some great parties are going to be held here this summer!
