The aim of our garden design is to update the space, add security and privacy with timber screen surrounding the bottom and right borders, with planting along those edges. We are digging up a Viburnum, Camellia and Aucuba to be dug up and used within these new borders.
As the access is pretty good, we’ve brought in a digger for this project, which will make scalping this big lawn a much easier task.
The air raid shelter is an interesting feature in this garden, and is currently used as a shed. It is a three compartment, surface shelter, designed to accommodate 36 people, which would have come from the surrounding houses.
Team Jerry started on day one by ripping up the patio. As this area is being extended into a larger patio with balustrade, the majority of this has been kept and will be smashed up and used as base. What remained of the fence was also removed.
The broken up patio has been placed a metre over the edge to use within the extension. Some of the excess will be disposed of.
Day two saw Sam on the digger scalping the lawn. Flo and I had our wheelbarrows filled and walked down the lane to the front driveway where the skip was being stored. We walked over 5 miles each doing this trip continuously throughout the day.
A few large roots were removed in the process, but generally it went very smoothly. The weather has warmed up a bit to 10 degrees; just grey and no rain, so we were thankful.
By the end of day two the lawn had been scalped with the majority moved through to the skip, and a pile waiting to go. Another skip has been ordered to start filling. This is a satisfying project, which will certainly have an impactful transformation. Come back soon to see how it’s going…
