The garden is large with two greenhouses in situ and overgrown vegetation. We began the job by bringing in a mini digger to excavate the main body of the space, removing the weeds and turf, to take it back to basics for redesigning.

Once the area was bare, with just a rose left growing against the fence, we sprayed out markings with chalk spray, to delineate the timber framed vegetable beds. As it is such a large area, we have included narrow paved channels that will be in between each bed, making the gardening easier.

Sam also marked out the area towards the end of the garden where we will construct a new yellow limestone patio. A lot of earth is being removed from the garden, with a pond being dug in the central area of the space.

When the digging of the pond is complete, it will have shelves for pond and marginal plants. It’s good to see the pond taking shape.

We brought in the paving slabs, along with ballast to create the base for the yellow limestone patio. Everything is being craned into the bottom of the garden, with our truck just fitting down the lane.

A trench was dug for a footing for the new retaining wall for a new patio to go outside the back doors of the house. We used concrete blocks and engineering bricks. These will be faced with cut paving slabs.

Towards the end of the week, we were at the stage where the first patio could start being laid. The weather has been pretty hot still, making landscaping that bit more tough.

The soil to be removed has been loaded directly into our truck and then tipped at the recycling centre. The ballast for the patio base has been prepared for the area being paved at the end of the garden. The retaining wall by the house has also been constructed.

As the hard landscaping, structural elements take place you can see the new garden design taking shape. It’s good to see the first patio area being laid, so that we start getting a sense of how the overall garden will look. Come back soon to see how this project is going.
