Hedge Cutting

We’ve had a Privet hedge to get back into shape this week. The owner who usually maintains it himself had been busy this year and so the hedge had got rather out of control. Flo and I stepped in to take care of it.

There were some gappy areas and one part had died off, so we looked at those to rectify them with a plan for maintenance going forward.

The owner wanted us to bring down the height of the hedge, to have it set at one level.

We started off by trimming the sides of the hedge, to get the overall size down. We didn’t cut it too tight on this first visit, but with a good cutting plan set for next year we should have this hedge looking much better next year.

We then worked along the top edge. As there were gaps and holes near the top we got it as level as we could. Trimming it will promote it to bush out and will hopefully fill in those gaps as we go forward.

Flo used loppers to remove the dead parts of the hedge. There is new growth coming up through the hedge, which should fill in this space now that there is more light and air. Removing dead limbs is a good idea as it stops energy being sent to parts of the plant which don’t need it, and allows that energy to go to live parts that require it.

It’s very satisfying tackling this type of job, and seeing something transform so drastically. It really looked great when we had finished.

Once the green waste was removed and swept up, we blew away any final traces of leaves, so that the pavement was left in a good state.

Next year the plan is to cut it three times, in the spring, summer and at the end of the summer. We will look forward to seeing it as it develops. Come back next time to see what we’re up to…
