The raised bed was on a slope, so we planned to dig down so that the new border would be ground level, but graded downwards from the Beech trees at the top of the garden.
The weather was beautiful on the first day, with dappled sunlight shining down through the trees above. It always feels nice to be part of something this special when you’re gardening, so we both appreciated the situation.
Thankfully, as the weather has been so dry lately, the soil was very easy to slice into. We dug up about 3 tonnes which were put into dumpy bags to be used in the future around the garden. The rest we decided to remove, directly into our truck, so that we could take it away to the tip.
The second day saw progress, as this project started coming together. As there are different levels on each side of the border, we did our best to grade the soil. Once the shrubs are planted the edges of this border won’t be so obvious.
It doesn’t look like much at the moment – but this blank canvas is just waiting to be filled with colour, shape and form. Come back soon to see how this memorial gardening project is coming along…
