St. Werburgh’s Community Centre Volunteer Day

After a very wet, rainy volunteer session at the community centre at the weekend, we are very pleased to have created this new green roof store cupboard for them. The sedums that we planted on it are fast growing and will creep and trail to create a mat of growth across the top of the roof. They are versatile, drought and pollution tolerant and are perfect for a green roof in the middle of the city.

The community centre is managed by the St. Werburgh’s Community Association, which aims to provide accessible and affordable meeting rooms and facilities for individuals, community groups and voluntary organisations.

They focus on building mutually beneficial partnerships between residents, groups and organisations in the community. In support of this, they run free events and projects, and deliver grant funded services for local people, current to include Raking & Baking (8-week cooking and gardening courses), St Werbees Stay & Play (a weekly group for pre-school children and their grown-ups), Tai Chi for over 50’s, Easy PC (one-to-one sessions and group computer classes for beginners, older people, and people who are looking for work), Picnic in the Park, Festive Friends, Open Volunteer Gardening Days and Christmas Market. They offer a free open access computer lab in their lobby with free wi-fi and they support people in applying for jobs online, printing and formatting CVs and writing cover letters.

The new store cupboard has replaced  an old compost bin that had seen better days.

The store cupboard looks great next to the pergola that we built a couple of years ago on a similar volunteer day. It’s great being able to support a local centre that helps our community. There is such a nice vibe there and we enjoy the time we spend helping to make things for the centre, as well as developing volunteer’s skills.
